Year 10: Rights and freedoms in Australia

Description

Students complete a case study on the significance of one of the following civil rights events for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples:

  • 1962 right to vote federally
  • 1967 referendum
  • Yirrkala Bark Petition
  • Wave Hill strike
  • Tent Embassy
  • Mabo
  • tabling of the Bringing Them Home Report (The Stolen Generations)
  • reconciliation movement
  • 2008 Apology to Australia's Indigenous Peoples.

They develop a script with references and deliver a spoken/signed presentation that:

  • investigates the significance of the chosen civil rights event
  • analyses and synthesises information from a range of primary and secondary sources
  • plans and delivers a spoken presentation which incorporates historical arguments based upon referenced sources of evidence.
