Transition to school

Transition to school is a process of continuity and change as children move into their first year of school.

The transition process:

  • happens over time, starting before children begin school, to support children and families feel a sense of belonging at school
  • involves collaboration between partners including Prep teachers, school leaders, kindergarten teachers, parents and carers, family and community members to help children experience a positive transition to school
  • builds understanding of children and families so schools can plan for and support continuity of learning from prior-to-school settings into Prep.

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) supports schools to access and use information shared through a transition statement created in the QCAA Portal. This information supports children as they start Prep.

Information on creating transition statements for kindergartens can be found in Creating transition statements.
