All partners in transition play a role in supporting children as they start Prep.
A positive transition to school is supported by collaborative approaches to identify, implement and monitor transition strategies. It also includes reflecting on how well these strategies work.
The following resources can assist school leaders to develop and review whole-school approaches to school transition and continuity of learning from kindergarten to school:
- Whole-school curriculum and assessment planning: Reflection tool for school leaders (DOCX, 239.7 KB)

- Queensland's commitment to positive transitions — The State of Queensland (Department of Education).
A common strategy used across Queensland schools is accessing and using kindergarten transition statements to:
- understand each child’s learning, strengths and interests
- plan and prepare for each child to experience a positive start to school.
Further information and resources are available at Using kindergarten transition statements.
Planning for continuity of learning
Planning for continuity of learning includes considering continuity of curriculum and pedagogies across educational settings.
Continuity of curriculum
Understanding children's learning experiences in kindergarten can support curriculum decision-making about progression of learning into Prep.
The following resources show some curriculum connections between kindergarten and Prep, and support reflection on teaching and learning that builds on prior learning:
- Curriculum connections: QKLG 2024 and AC v9.0 (PDF, 211.7 KB)
- Continuity of learning: English and Mathematics.
Continuity of pedagogies
Teachers use a range and balance of age-appropriate pedagogical approaches to actively engage children in their learning.
Kindergarten teachers can provide information in a child’s transition statement about successful intentional teaching strategies and practices used in kindergarten. This information is included in the Suggestions to support continuity of learning for each of the 5 learning and development areas.
The State of Queensland (Department of Education) provide research and further information on age-appropriate pedagogies (AAP) for the early years of schooling.
