Year 4 and Year 7 Australian Curriculum v9.0: Quality assurance and moderation trials

In Semester 1, 2026 the QCAA is conducting quality assurance and moderation trials for the Australian Curriculum v9.0. Schools have nominated to take part in the following areas:

  • Year 4 — English, Mathematics
  • Year 7 — English, Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, History, Japanese, Dance.

Expressions of interest are now closed.

Purpose

Bringing greater consistency to curriculum and assessment is central to the P–10 Australian Curriculum v9.0. The quality assurance and moderation trials will help teachers:

  • build shared understanding of the Australian Curriculum v9.0 achievement standards
  • develop and refine assessment tasks and marking guides
  • support consistent, evidence-based judgments about student work
  • encourage rich professional discussions about assessment and standards
  • strengthen assessment practices across classrooms and schools.

The trial also builds on knowledge from the QCAA's self-paced assessment literacy courses for Prep–Year 6 and Years 7–10.

What's involved

Participating schools are taking part in three 60-minute QCAA-facilitated sessions:

  1. Quality assurance — Review and refine a Term 2 assessment task and marking guide (Term 1, Week 8 (beginning 16 March))
  2. Calibration — Align judgments against marking guides and standards before marking student work (Term 2, Week 7 (beginning 1 June))
  3. Consensus — Agree on the qualities evident in student work (Term 2, Week 9 (beginning 15 June)).

Schools will:

  • use the QCAA standard elaborations and P–10 Planning app to develop their assessment task and marking guide
  • implement the assessment and collect student evidence
  • share their assessment task, marking guide and de-identified student work with other participating schools
  • engage in professional conversations about matching student evidence with standards.
