Applied subjects suit students who are interested in pathways that lead to vocational education and training or work after senior schooling.
Results in Applied subjects contribute to the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). One Applied subject result may also contribute to an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Complementary skills
Applied syllabuses include opportunities to develop complementary skills. These skills overlap with subject content and help students live and work successfully in the 21st century. These complementary skills are literacy and numeracy.
Literacy
Literacy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions about language and texts. Students need literacy to understand and convey English language content.
Numeracy
Numeracy is the knowledge, skills, behaviours and dispositions that students need to:
- use mathematics in a wide range of situations
- recognise and understand the role of mathematics in the world
- develop the dispositions and capacities to use mathematical knowledge and skills purposefully.
21st century skills
These are the attributes and skills students need to prepare them for higher education, work, and engagement in a complex and rapidly changing world.
These skills include critical thinking, creative thinking, communication, collaboration and teamwork, personal and social skills, and digital literacy. The explanations of associated skills are available at 21st century skills.
