Understanding texts
The following resources support the Understanding texts sub-element of the Reading and viewing element. The Understanding texts sub-element describes how a student becomes increasingly proficient at using texts to build meaning by decoding, interacting, evaluating and analysing (ACARA 2010). The Guidance for Teachers (PDF, 1.4 MB) provides an overview on how the resources within a series can be used.
The series is organised into three levels of learning (surface learning, deep learning and transfer of learning), with each phase building on the other.
In this initial phase of learning, students first encounter knowledge and skills, often in the form of explicit teaching.

In this phase, students make connections across concepts and knowledge, participating in active discussions to unpack and make sense of their reading (and viewing).

During this phase, students take responsibility for their own learning, comparing concepts and knowledge across texts, responding to new and novel situations, and applying their knowledge and skills.
