Heads of Department Networking forums
3 February 2020
To support schools to implement the new Humanities and Social Sciences General syllabuses, the QCAA is inviting Heads of Department to networking forums across the state, starting in February.
Participants will have the opportunity to:
- discuss approaches to implementation of the 2019 General syllabuses
- develop and maintain collegial relationships with other Heads of Department
- strengthen local professional networks
- share ideas about best practice.
Places at each venue are limited so we ask that schools send up to two Heads of Department for the Humanities and Social Sciences Learning Area (including Business).
For those who cannot attend in person, the QCAA is also hosting a webinar in March.

Preparing for endorsement event 2
15 January 2020
Schools are reminded that submissions for the second endorsement event are due by 5.00pm on Friday 31 January 2020. Assessments must be submitted via the Endorsement application in the QCAA Portal.
The QCAA has developed a wide range of resources to help schools develop and submit assessment for endorsement. These can be accessed via the QCAA Portal > Noticeboard > Developing and submitting assessment for endorsement — support resources. They include a resource for schools on the lessons learned from the first endorsement event.
Subject specific information is also available via the QCAA Portal > Syllabuses application. Select the Units 3 and 4 tab to access the endorsement submission information and quality assurance tools for each instrument.
Top tips for getting assessment endorsed
- Alignment: Ensure assessment instruments match syllabus topics, subject matter, and assessment objectives or specifications.
- Authenticity: Ensure assessment instruments are constructed so that students have an opportunity to provide unique responses. QCAA-developed sample assessments are in the public domain and cannot be submitted by schools for endorsement.
- Scope and scale: Be aware of the syllabus conditions (word length and time) to ensure that students can complete the assessment in sufficient depth to demonstrate the range of performance levels. Consider whether qualifiers such as ‘thorough’ or ‘concise’ analysis can be demonstrated within the word length or time constraint.
- Language: Use language that is clear, direct and accessible to students. Proofread to ensure there are no spelling, grammar or punctuation errors.

Become a QCAA assessor (confirmation)
27 September 2019
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) is seeking applications from experienced teachers across all General and General (Extension) subjects for QCAA assessor (confirmation) roles.
In the new QCE system, confirmation is the process that examines the accuracy and consistency of teachers’ judgments about students’ responses to summative internal assessment instruments.
The QCAA employs and trains QCAA assessors (confirmation) to review student responses to summative internal assessment and make decisions about alignment between schools’ judgments and the ISMGs.
Confirmers will:
- contribute to an important quality assurance process in the new QCE system
- gain first-hand experience of the confirmation process so they can inform their school’s approach to assessment
- increase their understanding of the new syllabuses and instrument-specific marking guides
- be able to record their training as continuing professional development with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT)
- network with like-minded colleagues in their local area and from across Queensland at confirmation events.
Applications close on Friday 11 October 2019.
For more information and to apply, visit QCAA assessors.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Accounting
What should teachers consider when designing the IA3 Project — cash management?
Teachers must check the specifications carefully when designing instruments. The syllabus specifications for IA3 (syllabus section 5.6.1) inform what must be included as stimulus.
Teachers should carefully note that stimulus examples are also provided in the syllabus and these are not exhaustive. If a school decides to provide pre-set up accounts using a computerised accounting package, they do not need to submit these for Endorsement.
Ancient History and Modern History
What should teachers consider when designing the IA3 Investigation — historical essay based on research?
Context
Where context is provided on the instrument, it may be brief and should demonstrate alignment to the syllabus topic.
For Modern History, it may be appropriate to identify the aspect of the topic in the context section.
Task
The syllabus specifications for IA3 (Ancient History syllabus section 5.15.1, Modern History syllabus section 5.16.1) inform what must be included in the task description.
The specifications include the requirement for an investigation based on a student-generated key inquiry question and a student-generated hypothesis. Therefore, the task should be framed in a way that is sufficiently open-ended to allow students to develop their own key inquiry question and hypothesis.
What are seen and not seen sources and how do I use them in IA1?
The IA1 Examination — Essay in response to historical sources includes seen and not seen sources.
As defined in the Ancient History and Modern History syllabus glossaries:
- seen sources may have been referred to in class by the teacher
- not seen sources must be excluded from teaching and learning experiences across the unit.
Use the definitions in the syllabus glossaries to help you select sources and prepare students for IA1.
What scaffolding can I provide for summative assessments?
- Section 8.2.3 of the QCE and QCIA policy and procedures handbook explains scaffolding for teaching and learning and scaffolding for assessment instruments.
Scaffolding for assessment instruments should not:
- lead to a predetermined response
- interfere with students’ ability to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the relevant criteria.
Scaffolding for assessment instruments in Units 3 and 4 should relate to how students:
- complete processes
- present their response.
The Ancient History and Modern History IA2 and IA3 sample assessment instruments show scaffolding that focuses on processes and presentation requirements.
Geography and Economics
Geography: What should teachers consider when designing the IA3 Investigation — data report?
The syllabus specifications for IA3 (syllabus section 5.5.1) inform what must be included in the task description. The specifications require students to use a fundamental set of raw data provided by the teacher as a starting point for their investigation.
The conditions for IA3 also note that this data must allow students to transform and represent the data in cartographic and graphic forms. Students then respond to an identified population challenge at a local scale based on the interpretation of the transformed data. They gather and transform additional data in their investigation of the identified challenge.
The specifications for IA3 also include information about the written report students produce, including the sections the report must include.
What accessibility adjustments are available for Geography and Economics stimulus and who is responsible for making them?
Internal assessment instruments
Where required, schools are responsible for selecting and adjusting Geography & Economics internal assessment stimulus based on syllabus specifications to suit their local context and their students’ needs.
Accessibility adjustments schools can make to Geography and Economics stimulus may include:
- using accessible colour and pattern fill to convey information
- enlarging the stimulus
- using coloured paper
- using black-and-white stimulus
Schools can make the above accessibility adjustments as required for internal assessments and do not need to obtain the QCAA’s approval to do so.
External assessment
The QCAA is responsible for making Geography and Economics external assessment stimulus accessible to all Queensland students.
Legal Studies
What should teachers consider when designing the IA3: Investigation — argumentative essay?
The syllabus specifications for IA3 (syllabus section 5.6.1) inform what must be included in the task.
The specifications state that:
- the context of the assessment is to be focused on a contemporary international human rights issue in which Australia has a legal interest. A context statement may not always be necessary
- an argumentative essay be developed (defined in the glossary)
- the assessment must allow students to ‘comprehend legal concepts, principles and/or processes of Australian human rights laws and international obligations …’ (Assessment objective 1)
- the response must refer to legislation and/or case law
- students are required to locate and select legal information to support their analysis and legal reasoning (Assessment objective 2)
- the topical issue for assessment in IA2 (Unit 3) and IA3 (Unit 4) must be different.
Do I need to provide links to resources or stimulus with IA2?
No. You do not need to provide links to resources or stimulus with IA2.
Page 36 of the syllabus refers to ‘Research practices including locating and using information beyond student’s own knowledge and the information they have been given’. The IA2 sample instrument has been updated to reflect the context of the task and may provide a background link/s. Where background links are provided, the instrument should be designed so students are able to independently demonstrate achievement across the range of performance levels on the ISMG for criterion 2.
