NAPLAN marker frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Applications for the 2024 NAPLAN marking operation are now closed.

Applying to be a marker

Applications for the 2024 NAPLAN marking operation are open and will close on 10 November 2023.

Successful applicants will receive offers of appointment by email between November 2023 and February 2024.

To be a NAPLAN marker, you need to have a current Queensland teacher registration number or have previously held a Queensland teacher registration number (e.g. a retired teacher) that has not been suspended or cancelled.

If you have this, you are invited to apply online through the Assessor Jobs application in the QCAA Portal.

If your application needs approval, your principal will get an email notification with a link to Assessor Jobs (in the QCAA Portal), where they can formally approve your application.

If the principal does not approve your application within two weeks, the position may be given to another applicant. Therefore, it is important to speak to your principal before applying.

To approve marker applications, a principal must be ‘confirmed’ in the QCAA Portal by an Organisation Administrator at the school. Before submitting your application, please check this with your principal.

For instructions on how an Organisation Administrator can confirm a principal in the QCAA Portal, see Accessing QCAA Portal .

Please apply for the NAPLAN Marker – Practising Queensland Teacher vacancy if you are a:

  • practising teacher assigned to a school (full-time, part-time or contract)
  • a permanent teacher on leave (e.g. parental leave or long service leave).

Please apply for the NAPLAN Marker – Other Eligible Applicant vacancy if you are a:

  • retired teacher
  • non-practising teacher
  • casual/supply teacher
  • contract teacher who is not currently assigned to a school.

All applicants must hold a Queensland teacher registration number. Expired or inactive registration numbers are acceptable, as long as the registration has not been suspended or cancelled by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT).

If you become a practising Queensland teacher after accepting an offer as an other eligible applicant, please contact the QCAA by emailing naplan@qcaa.qld.edu.au or phoning 1300 214 452.

Markers mark all the NAPLAN writing tests online from their homes. You must have good computer literacy skills and access to a suitable device that meets the QCAA’s minimum information and communications technology (ICT) requirements. For more information, see the relevant NAPLAN marker position description.

Tablets (including iPads) and phones are not suitable for marking NAPLAN writing tests. Your device must have a microphone and speaker for online communication.

When submitting your application, you need to select a two-hour meeting window during which you guarantee you will be available for online meetings. The meeting windows are:

  • Meeting window A (marker) — 4–6 pm
  • Meeting window B (marker) — 6–8 pm.

Group leaders and professional leaders do not have meeting windows in 2024. Instead, they must work at least five hours each weekday, at least three of which must be between 4pm and 8pm to attend online meetings.

Please note: if necessary, group leaders, professional leaders and managers of marking may also contact markers outside meeting windows and on weekends.

The QCAA acknowledges that workload commitments vary and has tried to give flexibility to balance workloads and downtime.

You can set your own work hours as a marker, as long as you:

  • mark for at least two hours each marking day
  • mark for at least five days (at least four weekdays) each week
  • mark between 5 am and 11 pm
  • log into the marking platform at the start of your nominated two-hour meeting window on each weekday you mark, to check for booked meetings
  • are available to attend any scheduled meetings in your meeting window.

These expectations are a minimum requirement and markers are encouraged to work more hours if able to do so.

Group leaders and professional leaders need to meet different commitment requirements, as listed in the relevant position descriptions.

Practising Queensland teachers are expected to mark and complete training outside of school hours. School release and the teacher relief scheme (TRS) are not available.

For information on commitment requirements over the Easter public holidays and school holidays, see the following FAQs:

If you wish to apply for a group leader or professional leader position, you can express your interest in your NAPLAN marker application in Assessor Jobs.
