Business General Senior Syllabus 2019: Syllabus amendment notice

Amendments have been made to the Business General Senior Syllabus 2019.

Summative internal assessment 1: Examination — combination response

Minor amendments have been made to assessment objectives 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to better describe the requirements of the assessment.

The specifications and conditions of the task have been amended to ensure consistency across the syllabus.

The instrument-specific marking guide has been amended for all assessable criteria to better describe the evidence required.

Summative internal assessment 2: Investigation — business report

Minor amendments have been made to assessment objectives 2, 3 and 4 to better describe the requirements of the assessment.

The specifications and conditions of the task have been amended for clarity.

The instrument-specific marking guide has been amended for all assessable criteria to better describe the evidence required.

Summative internal assessment 3: Extended response — feasibility report

Minor amendments have been made to assessment objectives 2, 3 and 4 to better describe the requirements of the assessment.

The unit description, specifications and conditions of the task have been amended for clarity.

The instrument-specific marking guide has been amended for all assessable criteria to better describe the evidence required.

Summative external assessment: Examination — combination response

Minor amendments have been made to assessment objectives 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 to better describe the requirements of the assessment.

The specifications and conditions of the task have been amended to allow for flexibility in the external assessment.

Syllabus objectives

Minor amendments have been made to syllabus objectives 1, 5 and 6.

Assessment guidance

Unit 1 and Unit 2 guidance has been amended to support schools, especially those that may decide to implement a concurrent delivery model.

Subject matter

Subject matter has been modified as follows:

  • Teaching and learning: Subject matter (Section 1.2.5) — a minor change made to the Business life cycle table for Unit 3; analytical tools table amended for clarity
  • Unit 1 — ‘analytical tools’ clarified in the unit description; unit objectives 2 and 3 reworded for clarity
  • Unit 1 Topic 1: Fundamentals of business — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘statements’ added to ‘mission’, ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ and ‘including’ has replaced ‘e.g.’ in ‘explain’; subject matter clarified for ‘create’ and ‘evaluate’
  • Unit 1 Topic 2: Creation of business ideas — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘report’ has replaced ‘feasibility study’ in ‘explain’; ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ in ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘evaluate’, ‘interpret’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 2 — unit description and unit objectives 2, 3 and 5 reworded for clarity
  • Unit 2 Topic 1: Establishment of a business — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ in ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘interpret’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 2 Topic 2: Entering markets — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ in ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘interpret’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 3 — ‘analytical tools’ clarified in the unit description; ‘or’ removed from case study requirements; unit objectives 2 and 5 reworded for clarity
  • Unit 3 Topic 1: Competitive markets — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘external environmental forces (STEEPLE)’ added to ‘select’ and ‘interpret’; ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ in ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘interpret’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 3 Topic 2: Strategic development — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; subject matter clarified for ‘explain’, ‘select’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 4 —‘analytical tools’ clarified in the unit description; unit objectives 2 and 5 reworded for clarity
  • Unit 4 Topic 1: Repositioning a business — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘repositioning strategies’ has replaced ‘range of drivers’ and ‘socio-cultural’ has replaced ‘social’ in ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘interpret’, ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’
  • Unit 4 Topic 2: Transformation of a business — ‘features’ removed from ‘describe’; ‘including’ has replaced ‘e.g.’ in ‘explain’; ‘drivers of change to analyse the business situation using a SWOT analysis’ added to ‘select’; subject matter clarified for ‘evaluate’ and ‘create’.

Reporting standards

The A–E reporting standards have been amended to align with changes to the instrument-specific marking guides.

The Business Syllabus 2019 (v1.1) and associated resources are available in the QCAA Portal. The syllabus is also available on the QCAA website.
