Refinements to Ancient History and Modern History syllabuses
Following a recent review of external assessment implementation, the QCAA has updated the Ancient History and Modern History General senior syllabus and alternative sequence syllabuses. The updates include:
- specifying external assessment topics for defined cohorts
- clarifying topic selection requirements
- reorganising alternative sequences subject matter to better align with the General syllabuses.

Online assessment trial applications now open
The QCAA will run a second online numeracy and literacy assessment trial for Year 10 and 11 students in Term 3, 2026. Participating schools will be able to test the platform and provide feedback on its features and assessment design.
Applications close on Thursday 2 April.

The QCAA is developing syllabuses for three new senior subjects:
- Critical Thinking Short Course
- Cultural Learning Short Course
- Science Extension
Teachers and other stakeholders can contribute to our consultation process via online surveys and focus groups, until 22 April 2026.

Confirmation 2026 — Event 1
In preparation for Confirmation Event 1, schools must submit provisional marks for the first internal assessment for Units 3 and 4 in General and General (Extension) subjects via the Student Management app by Tuesday 21 April.

Applied QA review meetings
In 2026, quality assurance review meetings will be held for several Applied and Applied (Essential) subjects. The Applied QA app will open in May and more information will be available later this term.

Essential English and Essential Mathematics — Phase 1 CIA
Phase 1 of the common internal assessment (CIA) for Essential English and Essential Mathematics runs from Monday 20 April to Friday 22 May. Schools registered for Phase 1 will receive assessment materials on Monday 30 March, via courier.

QCE academic integrity
Starting this year, students must meet the new academic integrity requirement for the QCE.
More information about the requirement is available on the QCAA website and in Version 7.0 of the QCE and QCIA policy and procedures handbook.
The suite of QCE resources for school communities has been updated to include the new requirement.

Prescribed text choices for English, EAL and Literature and external assessment topics for History subjects
English, EAL and Literature
Schools must register their chosen prescribed texts for 2026 for English, EAL and Literature by Thursday 2 April in the Prescribed Lists app in the QCAA Portal.

Ancient and Modern History
Schools delivering Ancient and Modern History (General and Alternative Sequence syllabuses) must register their 2026 external assessment topic choices in the Prescribed Lists app by Thursday 2 April.

AARA applications for alternative format papers
Each year, schools submit AARA applications for students who need alternative format papers for external assessment in General, General (Extension) and General (SEE) subjects and for the CIA in Essential English and Essential Mathematics.
Schools that missed the 27 February due date for applications for students with known conditions are asked to submit them as soon as possible.

School registered training organisations are reminded about the requirements for recording enrolments and results in line with the national VET Data Policy.

We're offering a focused series of webinars to support teachers with designing, implementing and quality assuring internal assessment for senior subjects. Sessions align to the 2025 General and General Extension syllabuses, plus Essential English and Essential Mathematics, and cover IA1–IA3, Common Internal Assessments and IA4.
